Library History

Early Public Library History

The first record of library service in the town of Early was a news item in the Early News in 1897. E.A. North circulated a petition to establish a library. Later in the same year Mr. North, the librarian, informed the News that the library had arrived. It was a traveling library. It was composed of 50 books.
Our first established library was organized in 1926. Books were donated  and placed in the library, which was located in the Public Restroom in the back of Hamm's Hall, which was later the furniture department of Smith Hardware. On Feb. 3, 1941 the library was moved to the new Municipal Building.  In 1966 the library moved to its present location in the Municipal buliding into what had been the theater room. Several times during the library's history its furnishings and decor have been updated and redone. The last known was in the Spring of 1990.  I think its time for another update!!
We have over 15,000 books plus now we have over 500 movies available for checkout. We are open 20 hours a week.
The EPL has always been fortunate in the quality and support of the members of our Board of Trustees and the interested and caring people in our community. We hope to have the continued support of our communities and continue serving them in the best ways we possibly can.
